Feeling too lazy to turn on or off the computer. Don’t want to sit on the sofa whenever you need to tweek setting in the HomeLab. Remote Desktop is the greatest invention ever for lazy people. All you need is a host like Sunshine and a remote client like Moonlike to get it working. In this article, I am going to show you the things you might want to have for remote desktop and how to set up the host and client for remoting your pc locally.
If you don’t want to have your screen on or mess with a virtual display software, you might want to get yourself an HDMI dummy plug. This allows you to use a remote desktop without the need to leave a display on.
Sunshine is a self-hosted stream server that you need to install on your PC before you remote it with a client.
1. Installing and Setting up Sunshine in Fedora
Step 1: Open the terminal and type in the command below command line
sudo dnf copr enable lizardbyte/beta
sudo dnf install Sunshine
#type in admin password
#type "y" to confirm the installation
Note: “S” for sunshine must be capital letter
Step 2: Launch Sunshine and setup user and password
Step 3: Done
This is a remote desktop client that you need to install on another PC which used to control the PC with Sunshine installed on it. Below is the setup process.
Step 1: Install Moonlight on client PC through Github “link”
Note: Appimage -> Linux dmg -> Mac exe -> Windows
Step 2: Launch Moonlight and click on the PC that you want to remote into
Note: First time you use the computer will show a lock icon, and you need to type in 4 no. pin and the PC in sunshine, which is shown below.
Step 3: type in the 4 no. pin and PC name shown in Moonlight to Sunshine
Step 4: Go back to Moonlight, and the Host pc is unlocked. Enjoy
You can turn on the host PC remotely with Moonlight if it is connected with Lan by the Wake on LAN features. The feature can be turned on in bios but not all motherboards support it, so beware of that.
Step 1: Smash the delete key during the power-on of PC to enter the bios
Step 2: Turn on the “wake on LAN” feature in bios
